These students are discussing issues that hit close to home. A lot of the issues going on today are happening in our own backyard and it is important for college students to be aware of the world around them and advocate for change in places that will affect them most.

A few weeks ago a fellow student started an online petition to raise awareness and get the rules prohibiting longboarding changed on campus. I knew that longboarding was frowned upon, having been stopped several times myself, but never knew a violation had the potential for you to end up with a $75 fine. That is why for my advocacy project I chose the sport I love, longboarding. However, it is not just a sport for me or the many other students on campus who do it, it is a mode of transportation. This campus pushes being ‘green’ and is very bike friendly. Yet, it does not recognize longboarding as a viable way to get to and from class. However, I argue that it is just as good as a bike and, in some cases, more practical.
